While major search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo dominate the Web today, search engines existed before “Big Data” acquired the first platforms that allowed users to search online web pages. Even now, there are many search engines outside the ones we all know, that offer search opportunities tailored to specific needs, e.g., user privacy, social and environmental values, and so on.

Let’s use these alternative search engines to explore an online “search engine egg hunt,” where participants look for interesting, quirky, or surprising information by searching online. Try not to use Google, Bing or Yahoo!

Another more narrow type of search engine is the “job search engine.” Take a look at them, imagine your dream job (which, if you’re retired, could be a hobby with supplemental income), and use the various job search engines to see what you can find.
